Exhibition “Sparks of Shine from the Ashes” opens

On February 28, 2026, as part of Orthodoxy Week, an exhibition of the Provincial Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of Petrovaradin entitled "Sparks of Glory from the Ashes" was opened at the National Museum of Art in Timisoara.

Dedicated to the conservation and restoration of the iconostasis of the Serbian Orthodox Church of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God in Čakovo, the exhibition takes visitors through the world of the finest Serbian church art of the 18th century, showcasing the virtuoso work of unknown carvers and icon painter Dimitrij Popović who created this altar screen.

The authors of the exhibition focused on the conservation and restoration process undertaken after the iconostasis was destroyed in a fire that engulfed the church.

After the liturgy served in the Cathedral of the Ascension of the Lord in Timisoara, the exhibition in the museum was opened by the Vicar Bishop of Romania, Paisius. The Metropolitan of Buda, G. Lukijan, also addressed the attendees, and Dejan Radovanović, an art historian, showed the guests how the conservators of the Provincial Institute revived the spark of brilliance from the ashes, recreated the icons, the paneling, the woodcut and the gilding, and in doing so, restored the face of prayer.

The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the Provincial Government, Maja Gojković, and Ivana Jakšić Matović, Consul General of the Consulate General of the Republic of Serbia in Timisoara.
