Conservation and restoration work project on the interior of one of the most important sacral buildings in Novi Sad

The Cathedral Church of the Holy Great Martyr George in Novi Sad, located near the Bishop's Palace, is one of the most significant sacral buildings in the city. Built between 1739 and 1742, this church has undergone numerous renovations over the centuries, especially after being destroyed in the bombing of 1849. years. Today, its monumental architecture combines Baroque and Classicist elements, making this temple a true architectural pearl.

The interior of the church is decorated with masterpieces by prominent Serbian artists. Stevan Aleksić conveys profound theological and historical messages with his magnificent paintings on the vault and walls, while Paja Jovanović, with the icons on the monumental iconostasis and historical compositions in the choirs, creates a visual display that brings to life key moments in Serbian history.

At the initiative of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Novi Sad, as the client, in cooperation with HeritageLab NS, Studio D'ART , the Inter-Municipal Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, Subotica and the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments , research works were carried out in which the Provincial Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, Petrovaradin, also played a significant role.

Based on these investigations, a conservation and restoration project for the entire interior of the church was created. The project included work on the floors, iconostasis, wall paintings, decorations, stained glass windows, chandeliers, stasidia... The project leader for this monumental project is the Intermunicipal Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, Subotica.
