Press conference on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition József Kiš: The Man Who Reshaped Bačka

Yesterday, a press conference was held at the Museum of Vojvodina on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition JOSEPH KIS: THE MAN WHO TRANSFORMED BAČKA, by Dr. Mirjana Đekić. The exhibition depicts the time of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and the most significant events in the Bačka region through the work of one man.

József Kis was born on March 19, 1748 in Buda, into a Hungarianized Slovak officer noble family, of the Evangelical faith, originally from the Novohrad County.

His work and contribution were crucial for the creation of the Great Franz Canal (Ferenc-csatorna) at the turn of the 18. and 19th centuries, which cut through Bačka and connected the Danube and Tisa rivers, enabling the indigenous and newly arrived population to live a fulfilling life.

In addition to hydraulic engineering, Jožef Kiš was involved in the design and transformation of existing settlements by constructing public buildings – town halls in Subotica and Sombor, churches and parish houses. After his dismissal from the position of director of the Great Bačka Canal, he designed school buildings and smaller buildings. He also dealt with commercial buildings that are typical of folk techniques – drying houses and a brewery building.

This exhibition is another in a series of cultural events that the Institute will organize during 2026 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of this institution.
