Happy holidays!

We wish you a happy Christmas and New Year holidays!

The appearance of icons on glass coincides with the Western European Baroque. The birthplace of this branch of folk art, which developed rapidly in the 17th century, is usually attributed to the fairy-tale landscapes around the source of the Danube. From there, it spread to India, China and America. It was adopted by Catholics, Orthodox Christians, Protestants and Greek Catholics. Icon painters on glass used a special technique for preparing paints, which were a combination of classical tempera and oil paints, and were often made from multi-colored earth, formed by the decomposition of rocks and minerals.

The icon of the Virgin Mary with Christ before us is the work of a Szentendre master, created around the fifth decade of the 18th century, and found in extremely poor condition in the Orthodox church in Bajša. The background is best preserved, consisting of a rich interweaving of oak branches and cherubs. The appearance it has today was achieved after restoration carried out by the Provincial Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments.
