Renovation of the iconostasis in Čakovo

During 2026, a team of experts from the PZZZSK continued work on the multi-year project to restore the iconostasis of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Čakovo.

Field research and works for this year are planned in two stages. The first stage began at the end of April and will last until the end of June, while the second is planned for September and October.

Within the first stage, three pillars with gilded capitals, an integrated woodcut that frames twelve icons from the throne and feast zones, as well as a woodcut from the frieze zone have been cleaned so far. Currently, a painting program on 12 icons is in the cleaning phase, which includes the removal of darkened varnish and subsequent overpaintings.

Before the start of the cleaning of the icons, special recordings were made in the UVF and IR spectrum. In addition to the above works, the parquet flooring of the preserved part of the central lintel was also done, while drawings of its missing part are in progress. By the end of this stage, the structural and visual integration of the new and old parts of the central lintel is planned.

The expert team consists of: painter-conservator Milica Mirić, conservator-restoration technician Dejan Radaković, conservator-restoration Miloš Gavrilović, painter-conservator Sunčica Vuletić, painter-conservator Jelena Ćurčić and image-cameraman Marija Erdelji. The project managers are: sculptor-conservator Miloš Vujaklija and painter-restoration Dragana Jelić.
