The exhibition Jožef Kiš: The Man Who Reshaped Bačka has opened at the Subotica City Museum.

On October 28, 2026, the exhibition of the Provincial Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments "Jožef Kiš: The Man Who Reshaped Bačka", authored by Dr. Mirjana Đekić, an ethnologist at the Institute, was opened at the Subotica City Museum.

The exhibition depicts the time of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and the most significant events in the Bačka region through the actions of one man.

The work and contribution of Jožef Kiš were crucial for the creation of the Great Franz Canal (Ferenc-csatorna), which cut through Bačka and connected the Danube and Tisza rivers, enabling the indigenous and newly arrived population to live a fulfilling life on the fertile plain of former swamps, marshes and marshlands. The Great Bačka Canal, as a waterway, enabled the accelerated development of central Bačka, which would develop into a significant industrial center over time.

Dr. Olga K. Ninkov, introducing the author, pointed out that the exhibition is the result of many years of research, including work with archival materials from Budapest, emphasizing that Mirjana Đekić connected ethnology, history, the history of architecture, and conservation practice, viewing Kiš's projects through their impact on people and space.
