Aksentije Marodić in search of eternal beauty

On Friday, October 16, at the Gallery of Matica Srpska, as part of the celebration of the great jubilee - two centuries since the founding of this significant institution, an exhibition was opened that represents the most comprehensive insight into the work of Aksentije Marodić, an artist who, with his unique talent, left a deep mark on the history of Serbian art and culture of the 19th century.

On this occasion, and on the occasion of the Day of the Matica Srpska Gallery, in the year of the anniversary, the Provincial Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for charity, cooperation and support in the work of the Gallery.

The exhibition "Aksentija Marodić in Search of Eternal Beauty", by Dr. Snezana Mišić, museum advisor, brings together more than 110 art objects from numerous museum and private collections.

The exhibition is particularly valuable for its presentation of the iconostasis of the Kovilj Monastery church, Marodić's most significant and monumental work. Its exhibition was made possible thanks to a large-scale conservation and restoration project implemented in cooperation between the Gallery and the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments Petrovaradin during 2024, 2025 and 2026. The Institute's conservators: Maja Velicković, Lazar Čurčić, Miloš Vujaklija, Jovan Ćeranic, Milan Bajčetić and Sergej Bugarčić carried out conservation and restoration work on the imperial and side doors during that period.

The work included the stabilization and rehabilitation of the wooden supports, the removal of atmospheric impurities and deposits from the gilding, the reconstruction of the missing parts of the woodcut, and preparation for gilding, while Marija Erdelji, the photographer of the painting, performed special filming, and Miloš Platiša, the coordinator of digital processes, created a 3D model of the iconostasis.

The exhibition will be open until January 17, 2027, and will be enriched by a diverse accompanying program organized every Friday from 7 p.m. Curatorial tours are planned on weekends at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
