The roof on the house of the big-hearted Baroness

The Baroness Jović Foundation building, together with the Bečej City Hall, represents the seat of the Bečej municipal administration.

The Provincial Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments completed conservation and restoration works on the roof and clock tower of the City Hall in 2024, and this year work began on the roof of the Baroness Jović Foundation.

It is a representative one-story building that bears the stylistic features of historicism, which was conditioned by the addition to the slightly older building of the City Hall. The architect insisted on symmetry, academic rigor, and the balance of masses and decorative elements used.

Baroness Eufemija Jović, née Janković (1779-1861), was the wife of Baron Stevan Jović of Siegenberg. Among other properties, she owned a house on the Market Square (today's main city square). Left without direct heirs, the Baroness bequeathed most of her property to the Serbian Orthodox Municipality of Staro Bečej in 1861. Her idea was to use the inheritance for the education of poor children.

The Church Municipality decided to demolish the old house on the square in 1983 and erect a new building on the same site, which is still known today as the Baroness Jović Foundation. The project was entrusted to architect Vladimir Nikolić.

The construction was completed in 1904. years. When the building was extended in 1928, architect Momčilo Tapavica was hired. The foundation is located within the spatial cultural and historical entity "Old Town of Bečej - Trg Pogača", which is categorized as a cultural asset of great importance.
