Meeting with the Metropolitan of Buda

Conservators of the Provincial Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments and Acting Director Dr. Vladimir Kubet traveled to the Republic of Hungary on March 21, 2025, for a meeting with the Metropolitan of Buda and the Administrator of Timisoara, Lucian, to inspect the condition of the paintings and iconostasis of the monastery in Srpski Kovin (Ráckeve), on the territory of the Diocese of Buda.

The monastery is located on the Danube island of Čepel, which belonged to the Hungarian kings in the Middle Ages, and the monastery church dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in the 13th century, while the chapel was added in the 15th. The church was given to the Raci (Serbs) as a gift from the Hungarian king after they settled on Čepel, around 1440. years.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Srpski Kovin was most likely painted three times. The first time in 1320, and the second time in 1514. years. The current paintings in the church and chapels, created in 1765 and 1771, are the work of Teodor Simeonov "Gruntovich", a Moskva icon painter.

It is painted in the style of late medieval northern Greek painting. A layer of paintings from 1514 has also been partially preserved. years. In addition to the frescoes, Gruntovich also painted the iconostasis in 1770, a series of holiday icons, and the Tomb of Christ. The throne icons are not the work of Theodore Simeonov, but of an unknown Russian icon painter from 1746. years.
