“Awakening from the Slavic slumber” 180 years of the Serbian reading room “Laza Kostić” in Sombor

On September 30, 2025, a Ceremonial Academy was held to mark the 180th anniversary of the founding of the Serbian Reading Room "Laza Kostić" in Sombor.

In the presence of guests and friends of the Sombor Reading Room, certificates of appreciation were presented to the members of the Honorary Board, an honorary president was proclaimed, and a special accompanying program was organized. When this important institution began operating in 1845 through the efforts of scholars and prominent Sombor Serbs, Aleksandar Stojačković, a journalist for the “Serbian National Newspaper”, announced in this newspaper the awakening of the people of Sombor from their “Slavic slumber”.

The Serbian Reading Room, built in 1882, is part of a fortified spatial cultural and historical entity of great importance for the Republic of Serbia, the "Historical Core of Sombor-Venac", whose renovation in 2023 was commissioned by the Provincial Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, with financial support from the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and the City of Sombor.

Through its commitment to this project, the Institute has acquired the status of a friend of the Reading Room, and the director has become a member of the Honorary Board.
