The construction of the monastery began at the end of the 12th century by members of the knightly order of the canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, and lasted for seven hundred years, during which there were demolitions and major renovations.<br \/>\n<\/br><br \/>\n<\/br><br \/>\nThe layering that the storm of centuries and the course of history have brought to the monastery, under whose roof the Crusaders, Franciscans, Mongols and Turks left their mark, has been proven once again by an incredible discovery made by the expert service of the Provincial Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments. During the research work that began in 2006, while deepening the niche that was undertaken with the aim of returning the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary with Christ, the remains of a previously unknown painting were found. While the subsequently added layer of bricks was being removed, the scene of the Crucifixion of Christ with the Virgin Mary and Saint John gradually began to appear.<br \/>\n<\/br><br \/>\n<\/br><br \/>\nThe fresco, which prompted further research, indicated the existence of an older monastery. Based on special recordings, physical-chemical, stylistic and architectural analyses, and archaeological research, it was concluded that it was created in the 13th century. Examinations and conservation work on the fresco continued within the framework of an international project funded by the Italian Ministry of Culture in 2016, with the participation of the Institute and the Central Institute for Conservation.
